Tokiji Fukasaku

Fukasaku is gentle, thoughtful and easy to underestimate. His age and absent-minded manner can make him appear detached, but his observations reveal considerable experience and an ability to understand the problems facing his students.

He rarely needs to assert his seniority directly. Even Taeko Miyauchi, normally a formidable authority among the Mizusawa faculty, defers to him.

Fukasaku emphasizes empathy and the difficulty of creating something oneself. His advice encourages students to understand the effort behind another person's work before judging it harshly.

Fukasaku is a specialist in classical Japanese literature rather than a competitive karuta player. His knowledge is particularly relevant to the Hyakunin Isshu, whose hundred poems provide the textual foundation of the game.

His strongest contribution is as an educator. He can connect literary study with broader questions of effort, criticism and personal development without reducing the poems to material that must simply be memorized.

Fukasaku becomes visible when Mizusawa's karuta activities intersect more closely with the school's academic and administrative life. His authority among the faculty makes his support meaningful even though he does not coach the players.
