Tatsumi

Tatsumi is stubborn, courageous and determined to prove herself. She refuses to accept her guardian's opposition to her becoming a firefighter and repeatedly places herself in dangerous situations to demonstrate that she belongs in the profession.

Her enthusiasm initially outruns her judgment. While attempting to catch an arsonist, she hides in rubbish and attacks Sakata Gintoki after wrongly identifying him as the culprit.

The determination comes from genuine admiration for the fire chief who raised her. Tatsumi wants to inherit his commitment to protecting people rather than merely imitating the outward image of a firefighter.

Tatsumi is trained in firefighting and emergency response. Her work requires physical endurance, courage around burning structures and familiarity with the tools used by Edo's fire brigade.

She is physically capable enough to tackle suspects and participate directly in dangerous rescue operations.

Tatsumi's strongest attribute is persistence under hazardous conditions. She willingly enters fires to save others despite lacking the extraordinary abilities possessed by many of the series' fighters.

Tatsumi becomes involved with the Yorozuya during a series of arson attacks in Edo. Believing Gintoki to be suspicious, she initially treats him as a potential criminal rather than an ally.

The case reveals Tatsumi's background with the fire chief. Her parents died in a blaze from which the chief could not save them, and his guilt led him to take the orphaned Tatsumi in and raise her.

The chief opposes Tatsumi's ambition because he understands the dangers of firefighting and fears losing the daughter he raised. The arson case ultimately forces both of them to confront the difference between protecting someone and preventing them from choosing their own path.

Tatsumi subsequently continues working with the fire brigade and makes occasional appearances among the residents and defenders of Edo.

Fire Chief is Tatsumi's guardian and adoptive father figure. He rescued Tatsumi from the fire that killed her parents and raised her because he felt responsible for being unable to save them.

Sakata Gintoki is initially mistaken for the arsonist Tatsumi is pursuing but later helps her during the case.

Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura become involved through the Yorozuya's assistance with the arson investigation.
