Taiki Kimura

Taiki is talented but deeply affected by the pressure of competition. Losing damages his confidence enough that avoiding another defeat begins to seem safer than continuing to pursue the sport at which he excels.

His fear extends beyond disappointment itself. Taiki becomes preoccupied with the possibility that another loss will confirm that he is not as capable as people believe, undermining the confidence expected from the gymnastics club's ace.

His encounter with Yuma challenges that outlook. Yuma's refusal to treat losing as a reason to stop trying gives Taiki a different perspective on competition and the purpose of continuing after failure.

Taiki is an accomplished young gymnast and is recognized as the ace of Heartland Middle School's gymnastics club. His athletic ability is therefore well established even though his confidence has been shaken by competition.

As a duelist, Taiki uses a defensive Burn deck. Cards such as Kuriboh and Muscle Gardna help protect him, while traps including Magic Cylinder and Secret Barrel allow him to damage an opponent without relying on conventional attacks.

His strategy proves effective against Yuma, whose aggressive approach gives Taiki opportunities to turn attacks against him.

Taiki appears while considering leaving the gymnastics club after losing a competition. His fear of experiencing another defeat has become strong enough to threaten an activity in which he has already demonstrated considerable talent.

Yuma becomes involved in Taiki's problem and eventually Duels him. The match places Taiki's cautious, defensive strategy against Yuma's more direct approach.

Taiki's story centers on learning that defeat does not erase previous effort or ability. The encounter with Yuma encourages him to reconsider quitting gymnastics simply to avoid the possibility of losing again.

Yuma Tsukumo meets Taiki while the gymnast is struggling with his fear of another defeat. Taiki defeats Yuma Tsukumo in their Duel, but Yuma's attitude toward losing helps challenge Taiki's belief that failure should be avoided at all costs.
