Story Role

Shinji is introduced during Project D's Kanagawa campaign as a largely hidden asset connected to Sidewinder. Although Go Hojo serves as Sidewinder's primary driver and public representative, Shinji possesses downhill ability that even experienced members of the team cannot easily match.

His history explains the source of that skill. Shinji grew up traveling the Tsubaki Line with his mother and began driving her home when he was still in elementary school. The repetitive routine gives him a relationship with the road remarkably similar to Takumi's relationship with Akina.

Sidewinder keeps Shinji as its final downhill option against Project D. Because he is not an established public racer, Ryosuke has comparatively little data from which to analyze his style in advance.

Shinji becomes Takumi's final opponent in Project D. Both drive AE86 Truenos, both began driving years before obtaining licenses, both learned their respective home courses through mundane family routines, and neither originally entered street racing out of personal ambition.

The similarity initially puts Takumi in the unfamiliar position of confronting someone who possesses the same home-course advantages he once used against others. Shinji knows the Tsubaki Line so intimately that his unconventional lines force Takumi to abandon assumptions about where the defending driver should be fastest.

During the race, Shinji's natural ability proves sufficient to pressure Takumi severely, but Takumi possesses years of accumulated competitive experience that Shinji lacks. The battle becomes less a simple comparison of talent than a demonstration of how much Takumi has changed since his own early Akina races.

The final phase pushes both AE86s beyond comfortable limits and concludes Project D's downhill campaign, making Shinji the last direct test of the philosophy Ryosuke used to develop Takumi from a home-course specialist into a broadly adaptable driver.
