Ojii-san

Ojii-san receives almost no dialogue or independent characterization. His comedy comes primarily from how casually Gintoki recruits an elderly cleaner into a professional soccer match without checking whether he has any relevant experience.

He nevertheless goes along with the situation rather than refusing outright. The episode does not establish his background, interests, or reasons for agreeing to participate, keeping him deliberately anonymous as part of the absurdity surrounding the hastily assembled team.

Ojii-san has no established supernatural abilities or notable combat skills. He is an ordinary elderly human employed as a janitor at the stadium.

No previous soccer experience is established for him either. His recruitment has nothing to do with demonstrated athletic ability; the team simply needs an eleventh player immediately before the match begins.

Ojii-san appears in Episode 106 after the Yorozuya accidentally incapacitate nearly all of F.C. Oedo shortly before Amarao's retirement match. Taking responsibility, Gintoki gathers an improvised replacement team that includes Shimura Shinpachi, Kagura, Kotarou Katsura, Elizabeth, Taizou Hasegawa, Isao Kondou, Tae Shimura, and Ayame Sarutobi.

When Shinpachi counts the assembled players and realizes there are only ten, Gintoki immediately recruits the elderly janitor who happens to be passing them. Amarao questions whether the old man is capable of playing, but with the match about to begin there is no time to find another replacement.

Ojii-san subsequently takes the field as part of the improvised F.C. Oedo lineup against the Matsuno brothers' team. He remains a background participant throughout the match rather than becoming individually important to its outcome.

Sakata Gintoki recruits Ojii-san without warning when F.C. Oedo's emergency replacement team needs one final player.

Amarao Daisaku is the professional player whose retirement match Ojii-san is recruited to participate in. Amarao immediately questions whether the elderly janitor will be useful to the team.

Shimura Shinpachi is the person who notices that the hastily assembled team has only ten players, prompting Gintoki to find Ojii-san.

Kagura, Kotarou Katsura, Elizabeth, Taizou Hasegawa, Isao Kondou, Tae Shimura, and Ayame Sarutobi play alongside Ojii-san as members of the improvised F.C. Oedo lineup.
