Ochi-san

Ochi-san is insecure, anxious and desperate for recognition. Years of feeling ignored at work and at home have left him convinced that he repeatedly fails at everything he attempts.

He takes the haunted house extraordinarily seriously because frightening visitors gives him a rare sense of accomplishment. At the same time, he worries constantly about safety, rejecting many of the Yorozuya's dangerous ideas even when they might make the attraction more frightening.

Ochi-san is easily discouraged when customers are unimpressed, but Sakata Gintoki's encouragement can quickly restore his determination.

Ochi-san has no supernatural abilities or combat training.

His practical skill lies in organizing the haunted-house attraction. He plans scares, assigns costumes and tries to balance frightening visitors with keeping them safe.

His attempts are undermined by the Yorozuya, whose ideas tend to involve actual weapons or other hazards rather than conventional haunted-house effects.

Ochi-san hires Gintoki, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura to work at the festival haunted house. He immediately clashes with their approach when they arrive with costumes and props more appropriate to murderers than ghosts.

After several failed attempts to frighten visitors, Ochi-san admits that the attraction means more to him than a simple festival job. He explains that he felt ignored at his old company and eventually became estranged from his family.

Hedoro's arrival gives the attraction an unexpectedly frightening presence.

Ochi-san's wife Okaru eventually comes to the haunted house and takes him home, ending the separation that had followed his earlier failures.

Okaru is Ochi-san's wife. Although he leaves his family out of shame, she eventually comes to retrieve him from the haunted house.

Sakata Gintoki, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura are hired to help operate Ochi-san's attraction.

Tae Shimura encounters Ochi-san during the festival.

Hedoro becomes the attraction's most genuinely frightening visitor.
