Nicolas

Nicolas is intelligent, proud and confident in his ability to solve problems through information. His habit of carrying a laptop reflects his dependence on research, and he enjoys demonstrating that he knows more than the people around him.

He is perceptive enough to investigate Tonpa's history and immediately recognize the danger behind the veteran examinee's friendly behavior. Nicolas even identifies details about Tonpa's repeated attempts and concludes that the Rookie Crusher probably could have passed already if he genuinely wanted a license.

His confidence is much less resilient when information cannot solve the problem in front of him. The grueling first phase pushes him beyond his physical limits, and the realization that his usual strengths are insufficient causes him to break down.

Nicolas has no known Nen ability and displays no extraordinary combat power. His principal ability is intellectual: he is academically gifted, technologically capable and quick to gather useful information.

His laptop gives him access to records about other applicants. This allows him to identify Tonpa's long history in the Hunter Exam, his reputation as the Rookie Crusher and his repeated pattern of targeting newcomers.

The Hunter Exam exposes the limitation of this approach. Knowledge about competitors cannot compensate for insufficient endurance when Satotz forces the applicants through a prolonged run without telling them the distance or destination.

Nicolas appears during the first phase of the 287th Hunter Exam. Tonpa approaches him as a potential victim and offers him a drink, but Nicolas has already researched Tonpa and politely refuses it.

He explains that Tonpa has accumulated an extraordinary number of Hunter Exam appearances and holds an exceptional record for consecutive attempts. Nicolas also observes that Tonpa's performance history suggests enough practical ability to pass if he actually tried.

The endless first-phase run eventually overwhelms Nicolas. Unable to determine how much farther the group must travel, he loses confidence and falls behind, ending his examination before reaching the next stage.

Tonpa attempts to make Nicolas another victim of his Rookie Crusher routine. Nicolas's research allows him to recognize the deception in advance and refuse Tonpa's drink.

Satotz is the examiner whose endurance test ultimately defeats Nicolas. The lack of information about the course's length proves particularly difficult for an applicant accustomed to solving problems through knowledge and preparation.
