Musashi

Musashi is eccentric but surprisingly adaptable. His homelessness does not prevent him from appearing in a wide variety of temporary jobs and public situations, giving the impression that he drifts through Edo taking whatever work becomes available.

He is rarely embarrassed by his circumstances. Whether judging a contest, playing badminton or performing another minor job, Musashi generally behaves as though his presence is perfectly ordinary.

His recurring appearances also make him one of Edo's familiar faces despite his limited direct involvement with the principal cast.

Musashi has no supernatural powers or established formal combat training.

He demonstrates an assortment of practical and athletic talents, most notably considerable badminton ability. His tendency to appear in unrelated occupations suggests broad experience with temporary work.

Although his appearance inspires comments about having the "eyes of a samurai," the series does not establish him as an elite swordsman.

Musashi appears repeatedly in small roles across Edo, sometimes serving as a participant or judge in competitions and sometimes simply appearing among the city's homeless or temporary workers.

His recurring presence eventually gives what initially seems to be a background gag more personal significance.

Musashi is revealed to be Nishiki Matsugorou, the estranged father of Ikumatsu. Years earlier, after his son's death, he separated himself from his family and eventually became the homeless man seen throughout the series.

Gintoki becomes involved when Matsugorou's past catches up with him and helps create an opportunity for father and daughter to reconnect, even though their reunion does not unfold as a conventional family reconciliation.

Ikumatsu is Musashi's daughter. His real identity is Nishiki Matsugorou, and their estrangement stems from the family tragedy that preceded his life on the streets.

Sakata Gintoki repeatedly encounters Musashi around Edo and later becomes involved in uncovering his connection to Ikumatsu.

Taizou Hasegawa resembles Musashi in lifestyle, with both men frequently homeless or moving between temporary jobs.
