Mu Li

Mu Li is composed, analytical and remarkably difficult to provoke. He rarely displays the aggression associated with many of the era's generals and can converse politely with enemies even while preparing to destroy their armies. His calm exterior is supported by exceptional confidence in his calculations.

He is fiercely devoted to Zhao. Personal ambition matters less to him than preserving his state, and he repeatedly accepts enormous political and military burdens because he believes Zhao's survival depends upon them. That loyalty sometimes places him in conflict with Zhao's own court, where political interests do not always align with military necessity.

Mu Li also recognizes talent without regard for nationality. He takes opponents such as Wang Qi, Wang Jian and Xin seriously when their achievements warrant it rather than dismissing them out of pride.

Mu Li ranks among the most accomplished strategists in China. His greatest strength is long-range planning: he gathers intelligence, controls the flow of information, predicts enemy movements and creates conditions in which an opponent can be defeated before realizing the true shape of the battle.

He is particularly effective at strategic deception. False information, concealed armies, unusual formations and carefully timed reinforcements all appear in his campaigns. He also possesses a sophisticated understanding of logistics and fortifications, allowing him to think beyond individual engagements toward the defense of entire regions.

Although primarily known as a strategist, Mu Li is not physically helpless. He has extensive battlefield experience and can personally fight when required. His leadership is equally important; commanders such as Kaine and Di Fu demonstrate intense loyalty toward him.

Mu Li enters the conflict between Qin and Zhao as the architect behind a campaign designed to eliminate one of Qin's greatest military figures. He secretly constructs the circumstances surrounding the Battle of Bayou and brings Pang Nuan into the operation, resulting in Wang Qi's fatal defeat.

He subsequently becomes one of Qin's principal strategic enemies. During the Coalition War, Mu Li devises the larger invasion plan and later attempts to bypass Kankoku Pass by moving toward Xianyang through Sai. Xin and Ying Zheng's resistance at Sai prevents the plan from succeeding.

His importance increases as Qin commits itself to destroying Zhao. Mu Li's defenses repeatedly force Qin's greatest commanders to gamble enormous armies and resources simply to penetrate Zhao territory, while political interference from Zhao's royal court becomes an equally dangerous obstacle to his efforts.

Kaine is one of Mu Li's closest retainers and follows him with intense personal loyalty.

Di Fu serves under Mu Li and openly dreams of eventually earning a place among Zhao's Three Great Heavens.

Pang Nuan is a fellow Three Great Heaven whose overwhelming martial power Mu Li incorporates into several major campaigns.

She Qing is one of Mu Li's most talented subordinate commanders and is regarded as a potential candidate for the Three Great Heavens.

Wang Qi becomes one of Mu Li's most significant early opponents. Mu Li's concealed strategy at Bayou creates the circumstances that lead to Wang Qi's defeat.

Xin repeatedly interferes with Mu Li's plans and gradually develops from a young battlefield threat into one of the Qin commanders Mu Li must account for directly.

Wang Jian is one of Mu Li's greatest strategic rivals, with their campaigns becoming contests of intelligence, logistics and prediction.
