Miroku

Miroku is protective and compassionate toward her daughter. Although she understands that Shion may one day need the priestess powers to confront Mōryō, she wants her to experience as normal a childhood as possible.

This creates tension between protecting Shion from her destiny and preparing her for responsibilities that cannot be permanently avoided.

Miroku possesses the priestess sealing powers inherited by Shion. She is capable of separating Mōryō's spirit from its body and imprisoning the two in different locations.

She also leaves Shion a special bell connected to the younger priestess's supernatural powers and premonitions.

Miroku confronts Mōryō before the film's present-day events. She sacrifices herself to seal the demon, separating its spirit from its physical body and delaying its return.

Her preparations for Shion become crucial years later when Yomi attempts to undo the seal.

Shion is Miroku's daughter and successor. Miroku's choices define Shion's upbringing and the way her powers initially manifest.

Mōryō is the demon Miroku seals and the ancient enemy of the priestess line.
