Personality
Matsu Ippon is commercially shrewd and initially dishonest. When he recognizes the exceptional value of Wado Ichimonji, he attempts to purchase it from Zoro for far less than it is worth. His behavior changes once Tashigi identifies the sword and exposes the attempted deception.
He possesses genuine reverence for renowned blades and for people willing to risk their lives as swordsmen. Zoro’s decision to test his luck against Sandai Kitetsu’s curse astonishes him, replacing his desire for profit with admiration.
Matsu Ippon is also capable of generosity when moved by conviction. He gives Zoro both Sandai Kitetsu and Yubashiri without payment, entrusting the latter despite its status as his family’s finest heirloom.

Story Role
Story Role
Matsu Ippon meets Roronoa Zoro when the swordsman enters his Loguetown shop seeking inexpensive replacement blades. He recognizes Wado Ichimonji but attempts to conceal its value until Tashigi intervenes.
Zoro discovers Sandai Kitetsu and senses its dangerous nature. After Matsu Ippon explains that the Kitetsu swords are cursed, Zoro tosses the blade into the air and extends his arm beneath its descending edge, wagering his luck against the curse. The sword circles his arm without cutting him.
Impressed by Zoro’s resolve, Matsu Ippon refuses payment and gives him Sandai Kitetsu. He then adds Yubashiri, the best sword in his shop and a family heirloom, asking only that Zoro honor the weapons through his ambition. Yubashiri is later destroyed by the Marine officer Shu during the Enies Lobby escape, and Zoro lays its remains to rest at Thriller Bark.
