Mark

Mark is cheerful, loving and curious. His most frequently noted personal trait is his enthusiasm for food.

He is also emotional and can become frightened or upset easily, which is unsurprising given his age. Despite this, he wants to contribute rather than remain dependent entirely on the older children.

Life outside Grace Field encourages Mark's interest in food to become practical. He helps with gathering, gardening and eventually cooking.

Mark possesses no supernatural abilities. He begins the story as an ordinary five-year-old undergoing Grace Field's educational and physical routines.

After escaping, he learns survival skills alongside the other younger children. His interest in food translates into useful work gathering ingredients and helping prepare meals.

At the shelter, he develops an interest in cooking and assists Pepe with food preparation.

Mark appears among the younger children of Plant 3 and becomes part of the broader escape plan when Emma decides to take everyone aged five and older.

He successfully leaves Grace Field with the escape group, making him one of its youngest members. The dangers beyond the plantation force him and the other small children to mature quickly and contribute to daily survival.

Mark remains with the family through their later shelters and movements, usually outside the most dangerous combat missions.

Emma acts as one of Mark's principal older-sibling protectors and includes him in the escape despite the difficulty of taking such young children.

Naila is one of Mark's close companions and is frequently seen with him.

Pepe helps foster Mark's growing interest in preparing food after the children reach safer living conditions.
