Marianne Aura Cayzen

Marianne is determined, observant and strongly motivated by justice. Her undercover persona is deliberately softer and more dependent, allowing her to remain inside Cliff's mansion without openly revealing why she is investigating him.

Her genuine personality becomes clearer when discussing the suffering caused by the area's water shortage. She has little sympathy for the argument that one man's control of an essential resource can be justified by wealth or ownership.

She is also courageous enough to continue her investigation after being injured and placed in direct danger.

Marianne is an ordinary human but is trained as a federal marshal. She conducts undercover investigations and is comfortable carrying a weapon while pursuing dangerous suspects.

Her firearm resembles a revolver but incorporates a crossbow-like mechanism. An injured shoulder prevents her from using it effectively during her confrontation with Cliff.

Her principal strengths are investigative rather than superhuman: she gathers evidence under an assumed social role, maintains her cover and confronts her suspect once his actions are exposed.

Marianne stays at Cliff Schezar's mansion while investigating his control of the local water supply. Cliff portrays her as a threatened guest and hires Vash to protect him from the supposed danger around his estate.

Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson arrive while searching for water and become involved in the increasingly suspicious situation.

Marianne is actually investigating Cliff rather than seeking his protection. She uncovers his deliberate monopolization of the water supply and confronts him over the devastation his profiteering has caused. After Vash prevents the confrontation from becoming fatal, Marianne arrests Cliff.

Cliff Schezar is the subject of Marianne's undercover investigation. She exposes his water monopoly and ultimately arrests him.

Vash the Stampede is hired as Cliff's bodyguard and quickly becomes attracted to Marianne. He eventually understands her real purpose and helps ensure her confrontation with Cliff does not end in death.
