Luigi

Luigi is fiercely protective of Ellen and quick to assume the worst when he sees an unfamiliar adult near her. His immediate response to Ban demonstrates both his courage and his tendency to act before understanding a situation.

He is not malicious. Once Ellen explains that Ban was trying to help her, Luigi recognizes his mistake rather than continuing the confrontation.

Like Ellen, Luigi behaves with the straightforwardness of a child. The siblings are comfortable discussing the mysterious Capital of the Dead and understand its entrance in a way the visiting travelers initially do not.

Luigi has no established magical power or formal combat training. He carries a knife and is willing to use it when he believes Ellen is in danger.

He successfully stabs Ban during their first encounter, although Ban's immortality makes the injury inconsequential. The attack is more significant as evidence of Luigi's protectiveness than as a demonstration of exceptional fighting ability.

Luigi's knowledge of the Capital of the Dead is his most important contribution. He and Ellen explain that a person's strong memories of someone who has died can open the path to the realm.

Luigi appears when Ban encounters Ellen while searching for information about the Capital of the Dead. Seeing Ban near his weakened sister, Luigi immediately assumes hostile intent and attacks him.

Ellen explains that Ban was helping her, and the misunderstanding is resolved. Ban provides food to the children rather than retaliating against Luigi.

Luigi and Ellen subsequently explain how the Capital of the Dead can be reached. Their information allows the group to focus on memories of people they have lost, opening the route into the realm where Ban hopes to find Elaine.

The siblings are ultimately shown to have a connection to the Capital of the Dead itself rather than simply being ordinary local children with knowledge of the realm.

Ellen is Luigi's younger sister and the person he is most determined to protect. His confrontation with Ban begins because he mistakenly believes Ellen is being threatened.

Ban earns Luigi's trust after helping Ellen and refusing to retaliate when Luigi attacks him.

Elaine is the person Ban hopes to meet in the Capital of the Dead, making Luigi and Ellen's knowledge essential to his journey there.
