Li Bai

Li Bai is confident in his defensive ability without sharing the reckless pride displayed by some battlefield commanders. He understands that surviving to fight again is part of military command and does not regard retreat from a lost position as inherently shameful.

That pragmatism complements his specialty. Li Bai prefers situations where formations, terrain and troop discipline can frustrate an enemy's offensive momentum. He is sufficiently experienced to recognize the reputations of other Zhao commanders and speaks with confidence about officers whose abilities he has witnessed firsthand.

Li Bai is one of Zhao's foremost defensive specialists. Before the events at Bayou, he had reportedly defended a small city with only seven thousand troops against a Yan force of fifty thousand, establishing a reputation that reaches Qin's commanders.

His formations can absorb attacks and then transition into counteroffensives. Against Wu Meng at Bayou, he uses layered defensive arrangements intended to blunt the Qin general's tremendous offensive power rather than meeting it through simple brute force.

Li Bai is also an experienced commander capable of directing large formations. His strength lies less in unconventional schemes than in making conventional military principles extremely difficult to overcome.

Li Bai enters the story during the Battle of Bayou as one of the Zhao generals gathered beneath Pang Nuan's nominal command. He receives responsibility for the central Zhao army and faces Wu Meng, whose direct offensive style presents a severe test for any defensive commander.

His forces initially demonstrate why his defenses are famous. Wu Meng cannot simply erase the Zhao formation through a single charge and must work through the structure Li Bai has prepared.

Li Bai later remains part of Zhao's military establishment and is associated with the country's continuing defense against Qin. His survival across multiple conflicts distinguishes him from many commanders introduced during Bayou and allows his reputation as a defensive specialist to remain relevant as Qin's invasion intensifies.

Pang Nuan is the nominal commander-in-chief of the Zhao army in which Li Bai serves during Bayou.

Zhuang Zhao acts as the strategist directing the broader Zhao operation at Bayou while Li Bai commands one of its major armies.

Wu Meng is Li Bai's principal Qin opponent during the early stages of the Battle of Bayou, pitting Li Bai's celebrated defense against Wu Meng's overwhelming offense.

Li Mu is Zhao's leading strategist and becomes the central military authority under whom veteran commanders such as Li Bai serve in the kingdom's struggle against Qin.

Gong Sun Long is a fellow Zhao general who fights alongside Li Bai in the Bayou campaign.
