Koyuki

Koyuki is gentle, compassionate, patient, and optimistic despite spending much of her childhood seriously ill. When she first meets Hakuji, she shows concern for his injuries even though her own condition is far worse.

Years of illness leave her accustomed to isolation and uncertainty about whether she will live long enough to experience ordinary adulthood. Hakuji's companionship gradually gives her confidence to imagine a future beyond sickness.

She values simple experiences deeply, particularly conversation, companionship, and the possibility of seeing fireworks with someone she loves.

Koyuki is an ordinary human with no supernatural abilities, martial-arts training, or Breathing Style.

Her health is extremely poor when Hakuji first becomes her caretaker. She spends long periods confined to bed and requires extensive daily attention.

Under sustained care, her health improves substantially enough for her to participate in ordinary life and consider a future with Hakuji.

Koyuki appears through the human memories connected to Akaza. Her father, Keizo, takes in Hakuji and assigns him the responsibility of nursing his sick daughter.

Hakuji spends years caring for her, and Koyuki gradually recovers. After her health improves, Keizo offers Hakuji both the dojo and Koyuki's hand in marriage, and the two become engaged.

A neighboring dojo unable to defeat Hakuji fairly poisons the well used by Keizo's household. Koyuki and Keizo drink from it and die while Hakuji is away visiting his father's grave. Their deaths trigger Hakuji's massacre of the rival dojo and ultimately precede his transformation into the demon Akaza.

Hakuji becomes Koyuki's caretaker and later her fiancé. She grows deeply attached to him during the years he nurses her and gives him a future to work toward.

Akaza is the demon identity Hakuji assumes after losing his human memories. Koyuki's influence remains buried within him, contributing to his refusal to kill or consume women and shaping imagery within his fighting style.

Keizo is Koyuki's father and sole parent during much of her childhood. He devotes himself to caring for her and eventually entrusts both his dojo and his daughter's future to Hakuji.

During Akaza's final battle, Koyuki's spirit reaches him as his human memories return. She reassures Hakuji and welcomes him back despite everything he has done as a demon.
