Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi

Kiyoshi Harai

原井清志

Story Role

Kiyoshi's first chapter establishes him through contradiction. He has already graduated from the Exorcist Academy at sixteen and is regarded as an unprecedented prodigy, but his first official exorcism leaves him visibly terrified. The assignment becomes even more complicated when the possessing demon turns out to be someone Kiyoshi does not believe deserves destruction. VIZ's official volume description specifically frames this clash between Kiyoshi's legendary ability and fear of demons as the series' starting premise.

Meto's arrival forces him to demonstrate what "strongest exorcist" actually means. Kiyoshi combines Artemis, Hades, and Fiat Lux to overpower the Demon Lord after Yamada is attacked. The victory immediately has consequences because other demons become interested in the teenager who defeated one of their own.

The Naraku assignment then broadens the story beyond combat. Kiyoshi reunites with Sakaki, begins working at Gates of Hell, partners with Akari, and enrolls in high school. His list of one hundred things he wants to experience at school gives ordinary friendship equal narrative weight beside promotions and exorcism missions.

The introduction of Nehan and Jack Joe expands his understanding of the relationship between humans and demons. When other exorcists move against Jack Joe, Kiyoshi openly defends him, making it clear that protecting the weak can include protecting a demon from exorcists. This position differentiates him from colleagues who treat the Association's categories as absolute.

Kiyoshi eventually announces a professional goal beyond merely being acknowledged as strong: he wants to reach the Grand Cross rank and ultimately become a Cross Paladin, one of the highest positions available within the Exorcist Association. The Grand Cross Assessment therefore becomes an important test not because he needs to prove his raw power, but because ranking within the organization requires qualities beyond simply defeating enemies. VIZ's second-volume synopsis specifically centers the Grand Cross test and Kiyoshi's ambition to become a Cross Paladin.

During the assessment, Kiyoshi must deal with other powerful exorcists, the dangers of the Memento Forest, and the unusual creature Memmy. His instinct to form connections rather than merely dominate threats again influences the outcome, reinforcing that his greatest obstacles are social and emotional as often as they are physical.

Later Demon Lord conflicts raise the scale of the story considerably. Kiyoshi's confrontation with Asuta Roth establishes his reputation among the strongest demons, while the resulting attention eventually draws opponents from the Demon Realm who view defeating him as a measure of their own strength.

The Demon Realm conflict also reconnects Kiyoshi's present battles with the unresolved trauma surrounding Rushihara and his parents. His encounters with increasingly complicated demon societies make the division between "humans to protect" and "demons to exorcise" less reliable than the worldview he was originally taught.
