Keith Howard

Keith is arrogant, aggressive and intensely resentful of humiliation. His former standing as an American champion gives him an inflated sense of superiority, and losing publicly to Pegasus becomes an insult he cannot accept.

He is also highly pragmatic about cheating. Keith treats rules as obstacles rather than principles and readily manipulates other competitors, steals resources or conceals cards when doing so improves his prospects.

His dishonesty should not obscure his actual dueling ability. Keith understands Duel Monsters extremely well and possesses enough competitive experience to recognize weaknesses quickly. His problem is not an inability to win fairly but a refusal to accept the possibility of losing.

Keith specializes in Machine monsters with high offensive power. His signature card is Revolver Dragon, known as Barrel Dragon in the English version, whose effect can destroy opposing monsters through a chance-based mechanic.

His Duelist Kingdom Deck includes machines such as Slot Machine and Pendulum Machine, with cards designed to pressure opponents through raw strength and mechanical effects. His strategies demonstrate the experience expected from a former national-level champion.

Keith is also skilled at cheating without immediately attracting attention. During Duelist Kingdom, he hides cards and manipulates tournament resources, treating preparation outside the duel as another means of gaining an advantage.

Keith's rivalry with Pegasus begins before Duelist Kingdom. As the American champion, he accepts a public challenge from Pegasus, only for Pegasus to humiliate him by having a child follow written instructions that perfectly counter Keith's plays.

Keith enters Duelist Kingdom seeking revenge. Rather than personally collecting all the Star Chips he needs, he recruits Ghost Kotsuzuka, Satake, and Takaido, intending to exploit their progress for his own benefit.

He eventually reaches the tournament's final stage and faces Jonouchi. Keith resorts to concealed cards during the duel, but Pegasus exposes his cheating after his defeat and removes him from the tournament.

The anime later gives Keith additional appearances beyond his original Duelist Kingdom role, including circumstances in which he is drawn into the plans of other antagonists.

Pegasus J. Crawford is the source of Keith's deepest resentment. Pegasus J. Crawford humiliates him publicly, motivating Keith's participation in Duelist Kingdom.

Katsuya Jonouchi becomes Keith's opponent in the Duelist Kingdom semifinals. Keith dismisses Katsuya Jonouchi as an amateur but finds him far more difficult to defeat than expected.

Ghost Kotsuzuka, Satake, and Takaido initially operate under Keith's direction during Duelist Kingdom. Keith views Ghost Kotsuzuka, Satake, and Takaido primarily as tools for advancing himself.
