Kazunari Takao

Takao is outgoing, playful and highly sociable. He enjoys teasing teammates and opponents and is much more willing than Midorima to socialize with rival teams. Even during tense situations, humor comes naturally to him.

Under that relaxed exterior is a highly competitive athlete. Takao originally resented Midorima after losing to Teikou during middle school and entered high school wanting to defeat him. Finding Midorima on his own team changes that objective: rather than beating him, Takao decides to work until the prodigy acknowledges him as a partner.

He is emotionally invested in Shuutoku and takes losses hard despite his usual cheerfulness. After the Winter Cup semifinal defeat to Rakuzan, Takao attempts to remain upbeat until he and Midorima leave the court, then finally breaks down in tears.

Takao is a skilled point guard with strong dribbling, passing and defensive awareness. His defining ability, Hawk Eye, gives him a wide overhead-like perception of the court. Unlike ordinary players whose attention can be manipulated by Kuroko's lack of presence, Takao can keep track of the larger spatial picture and therefore detect him.

His passing accuracy becomes increasingly important as his partnership with Midorima develops. Takao can deliver fast, precisely timed passes without looking directly at the receiver, allowing Shuutoku to exploit Midorima's unparalleled shooting.

The Sky Direct Three Point Shot represents their partnership at its highest level. Takao passes into Midorima's hands after Midorima has already begun his shooting motion, requiring extraordinary precision from Takao and complete trust from Midorima.

Takao initially serves as Kuroko's natural tactical counter during Seirin's first official game against Shuutoku. His Hawk Eye prevents Kuroko from disappearing through ordinary Misdirection, forcing Seirin to find alternative ways to create passing opportunities.

Beyond that matchup, Takao becomes central to Midorima's development. The former Teikou player initially relies heavily on his own ability, while Takao persistently pushes toward a genuine partnership.

Against Rakuzan, their relationship culminates in a technique that Midorima could never have attempted during Teikou's individualistic period. Although Rakuzan ultimately defeats Shuutoku, Takao and Midorima leave the tournament having become genuine equals as partners.

Shintarou Midorima is Takao's closest teammate and basketball partner. Takao initially wants to defeat him, then changes his goal to earning his recognition. Their friendship develops despite—and partly through—the constant teasing between them.

Tetsuya Kuroko is Takao's positional counterpart and natural tactical opponent because Hawk Eye allows Takao to follow Kuroko's movements.

Shun Izuki is another point guard with an enhanced court-vision ability, though Takao's Hawk Eye covers a broader field than Izuki's Eagle Eye.

Seijuurou Akashi becomes Takao's direct defensive assignment during Shuutoku's Winter Cup semifinal against Rakuzan and overwhelms him with the Emperor Eye.
