Kazuma Matsuoka

Matsuoka is confident, sociable and persistent. Having returned from the United States, he occasionally mixes English into his speech and carries himself with an ease that can come across as overly familiar.

He is especially assertive where Chinatsu is concerned. Rather than hiding his attraction, he seeks opportunities to spend time with her and is willing to challenge Taiki's feelings, arguing that admiration for an accomplished athlete is not necessarily the same as romantic love.

That behavior makes him irritating to Taiki, but Matsuoka is not presented as malicious. He acts from genuine attraction and his own interpretation of the relationship he sees developing around Chinatsu.

Matsuoka is a skilled basketball player and a central member of Eimei's boys' team after returning from America. His overseas experience forms part of his background as both a student and athlete.

He is fluent in English as a result of studying abroad. That linguistic ability appears casually in his speech and reinforces the cultural experience he gained while away from Japan.

Unlike Chinatsu's basketball storyline, Matsuoka's athletic performance is not explored through a long individual competitive arc; his primary narrative role is social and romantic.

Matsuoka enters after returning from his American study-abroad period and rejoining Eimei. His immediate interest in Chinatsu creates another source of pressure for Taiki, who is still uncertain about where he stands with her.

He appears during important moments between Taiki and Chinatsu and directly questions Taiki's understanding of his own feelings. His confidence contrasts with Taiki's tendency to overthink the distance between himself and the older basketball player.

Matsuoka's pursuit ultimately does not displace Taiki from Chinatsu's life. As Taiki and Chinatsu become more certain about one another, Matsuoka recedes from the central romantic conflict while remaining part of Eimei's wider athletic circle.

Chinatsu Kano is Matsuoka's schoolmate and former romantic interest. He is attracted to her athletic ability and personality and openly attempts to get closer to her.

Taiki Inomata regards Matsuoka as an unwelcome romantic competitor. Matsuoka challenges Taiki's belief that his feelings for Chinatsu amount to more than admiration.
