Karli no Mama

Karli no Mama is loyal, protective, affectionate, and strongly attached to Karli.

Her behavior after the destruction of the settlement establishes that bond immediately: she does not abandon the vulnerable infant even when the surrounding humans have been killed or mortally wounded.

She later adapts comfortably to traveling with Thorfinn's group and becomes Karli's constant animal companion.

Karli no Mama has the ordinary physical abilities of a healthy dog, including a strong sense of smell, hearing, speed, and the instinct to defend members of her group.

She has no supernatural abilities or specialized training.

Her usefulness lies primarily in companionship and protective instinct rather than combat.

Karli no Mama appears when Thorfinn's group discovers the aftermath of the feud that destroyed Karli's household.

She is already protecting the surviving infant and his mother when the travelers reach them. After the group takes Karli, the dog comes with him rather than remaining behind.

She continues accompanying Karli through the Eastern Expedition and eventually travels west with the family to Vinland, remaining part of the household as he grows older.

Karli is the child Karli no Mama protects and her closest companion.

Thorfinn becomes one of her owners after taking Karli into the traveling party.

Gudrid becomes another of the adults responsible for both Karli and the dog.

Arngrim was associated with the household Karli no Mama originally belonged to.
