Kanchou

Kanchou is direct and uncompromising when discussing art. He does not soften his assessment simply because Handa is a successful young calligrapher, instead pointing out that technical skill alone does not make the work distinctive.

His bluntness collides with Handa's pride and sensitivity to criticism. Although his words are severe, his judgment is not presented as arbitrary hostility; Handa's subsequent struggle to find an individual style repeatedly returns to the problem Kanchou identified.

Kanchou is also more forgiving than Handa's initial assault might suggest. He does not remain simply an antagonist defined by that confrontation, and their later interactions show that professional criticism need not become permanent personal enmity.

Kanchou possesses substantial experience evaluating calligraphy. His importance comes from his ability to distinguish technical competence from artistic individuality, immediately recognizing that Handa's award-winning work is polished but too dependent on conventional models.

That judgment proves influential because Handa cannot solve the problem merely by practicing the same techniques more intensely. Kanchou's criticism forces him to consider the character and personal experience behind the writing rather than its formal correctness alone.

Kanchou is the catalyst for Handa's move to the Gotō Islands. After examining Handa's exhibition piece, he criticizes it as rigid and unoriginal. Handa, unable to tolerate the judgment, punches him, creating the scandal that leads Seimei Handa to send his son away from Tokyo.

Although Kanchou occupies relatively little page time, the criticism remains relevant throughout Handa's artistic development. The calligrapher's attempts to create freer and more personal work are, in part, attempts to answer the weakness identified during that first confrontation.

When Handa later encounters Kanchou again, their interaction demonstrates how much Handa's attitude toward criticism has changed; the man he once struck is no longer simply an enemy whose judgment must be rejected.

Sei Handa first meets Kanchou as a respected senior figure evaluating his calligraphy. Their relationship begins disastrously when Handa punches him for criticizing his work, but Kanchou's assessment becomes a lasting influence on Handa's artistic development.

Seimei Handa responds to his son's assault on Kanchou by sending Sei to the Gotō Islands, turning the confrontation into the immediate cause of the younger Handa's relocation.
