Kanbei

Kanbei is personable and willing to assist Sakata Gintoki and Taizou Hasegawa when he encounters them losing repeatedly. His reputation suggests an almost supernatural mastery of gambling, but he is less interested in maintaining a flawless heroic image than his legend implies.

He also values friendship above his own advantage. The history behind his injured eye demonstrates that another person's safety mattered more to him than preserving the ability on which his fame depended.

Kanbei is an exceptionally experienced gambler with an acute understanding of probability, psychology and cheating.

He was reputed to possess a right eye capable of reading luck. When a friend was taken hostage, Kanbei deliberately damaged that eye in order to save him, sacrificing the ability associated with his legend.

Even without relying on supernatural luck-reading, Kanbei remains knowledgeable enough to identify gambling tricks and participate in high-stakes games.

Kanbei encounters Gintoki and Hasegawa during their losing streak and joins their gambling activities.

Their encounter ultimately brings them into conflict with Kada, the Peacock Princess who controls much of Kabukicho's gambling business. Kanbei, Gintoki and Hasegawa are detained and forced into a mahjong game.

During the match, questions about Kanbei's supposedly luck-reading eye reveal the history behind his scar and challenge the mythology that has grown around him.

Sakata Gintoki and Taizou Hasegawa become Kanbei's gambling companions during the incident.

Kada controls the gambling operation that places Kanbei and his companions in a forced mahjong match.

Kanbei's unnamed friend is the person for whom he sacrificed his luck-reading right eye during a hostage situation.
