Izunavi

Izunavi is pragmatic and cautious about the dangerous possibilities created by Nen. He does not simply teach Kurapika how to become stronger; he repeatedly challenges his student's assumptions and warns him against restrictions that could needlessly destroy his future.

His teaching style is conversational but rigorous. When Kurapika wants chains powerful enough to restrain the Phantom Troupe, Izunavi explains that Nen cannot produce limitless supernatural effects without appropriate conditions. He guides Kurapika toward the concept of restrictions and vows while emphasizing the consequences of making them too severe.

Izunavi also recognizes that Kurapika's obsession with revenge can distort his judgment. Although unable to persuade him to abandon his objective, he helps ensure that Kurapika builds abilities with more flexibility than he initially intended.

Izunavi is an experienced Nen user with substantial theoretical knowledge. He teaches Kurapika the four major principles of Ten, Zetsu, Ren and Hatsu, the six affinity categories and the use of Water Divination to determine a person's natural category.

His greatest demonstrated expertise concerns Nen conditions. Izunavi explains that limitations, contracts and personal risk can dramatically strengthen an ability, but that the resulting power remains connected to the seriousness of the restriction imposed.

The manga has not revealed Izunavi's own Nen category or personal Hatsu. Although adaptations and supplementary segments have sometimes assigned information to him, his individual combat ability remains largely undisclosed in the canonical manga.

Izunavi encounters Kurapika after the Hunter Exam and becomes his Nen instructor. He oversees Kurapika's Water Divination, identifying him as a Conjurer under normal circumstances and helping him understand the unusual changes that occur when his scarlet eyes activate.

His advice becomes fundamental to Kurapika's chains. When Kurapika considers restricting all five chains exclusively to the Phantom Troupe, Izunavi argues that doing so would make most of his hand useless in ordinary situations. Kurapika ultimately limits only Chain Jail to the Spiders.

During preparations for the voyage to the Dark Continent, Kurapika recruits Izunavi as one of the Hunters placed among the Kakin princes' security teams. Izunavi becomes a bodyguard to Eighth Prince Tyson and studies the strange behavior associated with her Guardian Spirit Beast while the succession conflict intensifies.

Kurapika is Izunavi's student. Izunavi teaches him Nen and provides crucial advice about the restrictions governing his chains, while repeatedly cautioning him against allowing revenge to consume his future.

Tyson Hui Guo Rou becomes the prince Izunavi protects aboard the Black Whale. He investigates the effects associated with Tyson's Guardian Spirit Beast while carrying out his bodyguard duties.

Melody is among the Hunters recruited through Kurapika's network for the Kakin security assignments, placing her and Izunavi on parallel missions during the Succession Contest.
