Iwao Yamamura

Iwao is loud, imposing and extremely proud. His appearance and manner make even people familiar with him wary of provoking his temper, while his enthusiasm for fishing and his boat reflects the importance of the sea to his everyday life.

That intimidating presence is also used in contrast with the close-knit community around him. Handa initially reads Iwao primarily as a frightening client whose commission must not be ruined, while the villagers are accustomed to his personality and know how seriously he takes his interests.

He has a strong sense of self-confidence, expressed particularly clearly in the extravagant name chosen for his boat. His pride can put considerable pressure on Handa, whose perfectionism makes a permanent piece of large-scale lettering especially stressful.

Iwao is an experienced fisherman familiar with boats, the sea and island life. He also operates the local liquor store, making him one of the adults whose livelihood is firmly embedded in the everyday economy of the village.

His practical familiarity with maritime work contrasts with Handa's urban upbringing. Where Handa approaches the fishing boat primarily as an intimidating surface for calligraphy, Iwao treats it as part of his working life and personal identity.

Iwao is most prominently involved when Handa is commissioned to letter his new boat. Rather than working at a desk with paper, Handa must write enormous characters directly onto the hull, a task that leaves little room for correction and initially overwhelms him.

The episode becomes another step in Handa's adjustment to creating outside the controlled environment in which he learned calligraphy. With help from the islanders, he finds a way to approach the scale of the task physically rather than becoming paralyzed by the possibility of making a mistake.

Iwao also helps establish Miwa's family background and the working community surrounding Handa. Through figures such as him, the island is presented not merely as Handa's retreat but as a functioning village of fishermen, shopkeepers and families whose lives continually intersect with his.

Miwa Yamamura is Iwao's daughter. She knows his intimidating temperament well and warns Handa about the consequences of disappointing him while working on his boat.

Sei Handa becomes involved with Iwao when the fisherman asks the professional calligrapher to paint the name of his boat. Handa's fear of ruining the commission initially makes their interaction considerably more stressful for Handa than for Iwao.
