Harada Unosuke

Harada is intensely loyal to Isao Kondou and has enormous faith in his commander's abilities. Learning that Kondou has lost a duel is enough to leave him incredulous.

His muscular appearance and position in the Shinsengumi suggest a stereotypical tough officer, but Harada has a conspicuously sentimental side. Macho yakuza films can reduce him to tears, including the in-universe Alien vs. Yakuza.

He generally functions well within the Shinsengumi hierarchy and does not exhibit the same constant insubordination or eccentric personal rivalries as some of its more prominent officers.

As captain of the Shinsengumi's 10th Division, Harada is a trained swordsman and professional law-enforcement officer.

His large build gives him substantial physical strength, while his position indicates enough competence and experience to command other Shinsengumi members.

Harada generally participates in group operations rather than receiving individual duels, so the series establishes less about his upper combat limits than it does for Kondou, Hijikata or Okita.

Harada appears early among the Shinsengumi officers reacting to Kondou's encounters with the Yorozuya. He becomes part of the recurring supporting force around the organization's commanders.

During the Umibouzu incident, Harada participates when the Shinsengumi respond to the dangerous alien outbreak at the Terminal.

He continues appearing in Shinsengumi deployments, meetings and battles throughout the series, giving the organization a consistent officer beyond its principal named cast.

His role is primarily institutional: Harada helps establish that the Shinsengumi is a functioning corps with division captains and veteran members beyond the central quartet.

Isao Kondou is Harada's commander and the object of his strong loyalty and admiration.

Toushirou Hijikata is Harada's vice commander and superior within the Shinsengumi chain of command.

Sougo Okita serves alongside Harada as another Shinsengumi division captain.

Sagaru Yamazaki is a fellow Shinsengumi officer with whom Harada participates in organizational operations.
