Haji

Haji is responsible, streetwise and considerably more sensible than Heiji Kozenigata. She understands his eccentricities and usually compensates for them rather than expecting him to become a conventional detective.

Her past as a thief does not prevent her from taking police work seriously. She becomes a dependable assistant and demonstrates loyalty to Kozenigata even when his theatrical behavior makes their work unnecessarily difficult.

Haji also adapts quickly to the Yorozuya's involvement in investigations, generally reacting to their chaos with more practicality than her superior manages.

Haji has experience with Edo's criminal world from her former life as a thief. This gives her practical knowledge useful in investigations and pursuit.

She is physically capable and accustomed to fieldwork but is not presented as an elite combatant. Her main strengths are observation, street knowledge and common sense.

As Kozenigata's assistant, she helps track suspects, interpret evidence and coordinate investigations while he focuses on his hardboiled persona.

Haji is introduced during the Hardboiled Detective arc as Kozenigata's assistant during his long pursuit of the thief Chougorou. She brings the Yorozuya information about the thief's next target and joins the operation to catch him.

The case reveals the history behind Kozenigata's obsession and forces the group to distinguish between the criminal they have been chasing and the personal loyalty hidden beneath the detective's theatrical behavior.

Haji later remains associated with Kozenigata and returns during larger political conflicts.

During the Farewell Shinsengumi conflict, Haji and Kozenigata help Gintoki, Hijikata and Tae escape forces loyal to the new regime, placing the detective pair among the civilians and officers resisting the government's crackdown.

Heiji Kozenigata is Haji's superior and investigative partner. She provides much of the practical judgment their partnership needs.

Sakata Gintoki, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura work with Haji during the Hardboiled Detective case.

Chougorou is the thief whose long-running case brings Haji and Kozenigata into contact with the Yorozuya.

Toushirou Hijikata and Tae Shimura later receive assistance from Haji during the political turmoil surrounding the Shinsengumi.
