Gunpei Shouji

Shouji is stern, observant and disciplined. He demands serious effort from his players but does not rely on humiliation or arbitrary cruelty; his harshness is directed toward producing a stronger football team.

His philosophy emphasizes defense above spectacle. Oujou's strongest teams are built by reducing the opponent's options, controlling the line and trusting technically disciplined defenders to prevent scoring.

Shouji is also quick to recognize potential. When Shin attends a football tryout with Sakuraba, Shouji immediately understands that the newcomer possesses exceptional athletic qualities and acts to keep him from being recruited by another school club.

As a coach, Shouji's greatest ability is developing defensive personnel. Oujou's linebackers and linemen operate within a system built on fundamentals, physical conditioning and disciplined assignments.

His own football background gives him practical understanding of extreme training. During his university years, he survived demanding preparation alongside Doburoku without suffering the career-altering injuries that affected his former teammate.

Shouji also adapts his defense to opponents rather than relying solely on reputation. His confidence in Oujou comes from the work invested in its players and the depth of its defensive structure.

Shouji is present from Oujou's early establishment as Deimon's primary defensive benchmark. While Shin becomes the team's visible ace, Shouji is the coach responsible for turning exceptional individuals into the White Knights' coordinated defense.

His history with Doburoku connects the two schools through an older generation of football. Their contrasting personalities conceal a shared background in high-level competition and severe training.

Oujou's Kanto semifinal against Deimon becomes the ultimate test of Shouji's defensive philosophy. Deimon eventually breaks through for a last-second victory, ending the White Knights' attempt to reach the Christmas Bowl that season.

Doburoku Sakaki is Shouji's former university teammate and longtime counterpart. Together, Doburoku Sakaki and Shouji were known as the Twin Japanese Blades.

Seijuro Shin is the exceptional athlete Shouji recognizes almost immediately and develops into Oujou's defensive ace.

Haruto Sakuraba enters Oujou football alongside Seijuro Shin, and Shouji oversees his slower development into a genuine first-rate receiver.

Makoto Ootawara is the captain and powerful defensive lineman at the center of Shouji's White Knights.
