George Saotome

George is sarcastic, observant and more willing than most Spirit World employees to notice Koenma's shortcomings. Although he generally obeys orders, his expressions and comments frequently reveal what he actually thinks of his boss's behavior.

He is also remarkably tolerant. Koenma regularly redirects frustration toward him, yet George continues performing his work and assisting with Spirit World's crises.

His comic role does not prevent him from showing concern when events become genuinely dangerous. As the stakes surrounding Yusuke rise, George frequently serves as the person with whom Koenma discusses unfolding problems.

George is an oni of Spirit World, but the anime does not establish him as a serious combatant. His duties are administrative rather than martial.

He possesses enough familiarity with spirits, demons, reincarnation and Spirit World's procedures to assist Koenma with supernatural cases.

No named offensive technique is attributed to him in the television series.

George is an anime-original expansion of the workers surrounding Koenma. He appears repeatedly at Spirit World headquarters, giving Koenma someone to converse with when Botan and Yusuke are operating in the Human World.

Through these exchanges, George helps communicate information about missions, Demon World, tournament events and Spirit World's responses to crises without requiring Koenma to deliver exposition alone.

His appearances also create a continuous comic subplot around the bureaucracy of the afterlife.

Near the end of the anime, the series makes a meta-joke connecting George with the narration, exploiting the fact that the same Japanese actor, Tomomichi Nishimura, performs both roles.

Koenma is George's employer and the person with whom he spends most of his screen time. Their relationship mixes genuine loyalty with constant comic irritation.

Botan is another Spirit World employee who frequently works outside headquarters while George remains beside Koenma.

Yusuke Urameshi is the Spirit Detective whose missions George and Koenma monitor from Spirit World.

King Enma is Koenma's father and the ruler of the Spirit World bureaucracy in which George works.
