Fuu Kasumi

Fuu is optimistic, stubborn, compassionate, resourceful, and more courageous than her lack of combat training initially suggests. She readily argues with Mugen despite knowing he can kill experienced swordsmen, and she is equally willing to criticize Jin when his detachment frustrates her.

Her most visible weakness is a tendency to stumble into trouble. Fuu is kidnapped, deceived, separated from her companions, or drawn into other people's problems with remarkable frequency. Some of this comes from inexperience, but much of it comes from empathy: she is more willing than either swordsman to speak to strangers, hear their problems, and become personally involved.

She also has an enormous appetite relative to her size. Food becomes a recurring concern because the group is usually broke, and Fuu can consume startling quantities when given the opportunity. Her hunger often motivates improvised money-making schemes and creates conflict when Mugen gambles away resources the group desperately needs.

Fuu is socially much more adaptable than her companions. Jin's reserve and Mugen's hostility make ordinary interaction difficult, so she negotiates lodging, asks for directions, pursues information, and communicates with people who might otherwise refuse to deal with the trio.

Beneath her cheerful exterior is persistent anger and grief surrounding her family. She has spent years with unanswered questions about the man she seeks, and the journey is driven as much by the need to understand why he disappeared as by the desire simply to find him.

Fuu is not a trained frontline fighter. She carries a small kaiken, but it is more a personal defensive weapon than something she can use against professional swordsmen. Her survival therefore depends on intelligence, improvisation, allies, and Momo rather than direct combat.

She is quick-thinking under pressure. In the opening episode, Fuu helps rescue Mugen and Jin from execution using fireworks disguised as bombs, establishing a pattern in which she compensates for physical limitations through deception and timing.

Fuu is also skilled at persuading people. She convinces two men who have almost no interest in her personal problem to postpone their duel indefinitely, repeatedly talks her way into places where she should not have access, and gathers information from strangers throughout the journey.

Momo functions as a small but surprisingly useful partner. The flying squirrel hides inside Fuu's clothing and can emerge suddenly to distract or attack someone at close range, giving Fuu an advantage when a captor assumes she is completely helpless.

Her greatest practical ability is persistence. Fuu continues the search even when the group has no money, no clear route, and only fragmentary information about the sunflower samurai. She frequently has to restart the investigation after false leads or separations without losing sight of the original goal.

Fuu begins the series working in a teahouse after the death of her mother. When abusive customers create trouble, she asks Mugen for help in exchange for food. Jin independently becomes involved, and the confrontation between the two swordsmen leads to the destruction of the establishment.

After Mugen and Jin are arrested and sentenced to death, Fuu helps them escape. In return, she extracts a promise that they will travel with her until she finds the samurai who smells of sunflowers. This agreement establishes the series' central journey.

Fuu initially provides very little information about the man beyond the unusual sunflower description. The vagueness frustrates her companions, especially when it becomes clear she does not know exactly where he is. The group therefore follows rumors, contacts, religious communities, and partial clues across Japan.

Her role differs fundamentally from that of Mugen and Jin. They resolve many immediate threats through swordsmanship, but Fuu supplies the destination and repeatedly determines whether the journey continues at all. Without her, the two men would likely have resumed their duel and gone separate ways almost immediately.

Fuu eventually reveals that the sunflower samurai is her missing father, Seizo Kasumi. She has carried anger toward him for abandoning her and her mother and wants to confront him rather than simply reunite with him.

Further investigation reveals that Seizo was connected to persecuted Christians and the Shimabara Rebellion. His disappearance was tied to attempts to protect his family from government retaliation rather than simple indifference, making Fuu's search increasingly dangerous once officials realize whom she is trying to find.

Fuu finally reaches her father when he is already gravely ill. Their reunion gives her the explanation she has pursued across Japan, but Kariya Kagetoki follows her to the meeting and kills Seizo after allowing father and daughter a final conversation.

Mugen is one of the two swordsmen Fuu recruits as bodyguards. She constantly argues with Mugen over his recklessness, appetite, womanizing, gambling, and refusal to plan ahead, but she also trusts him to come when she is in real danger. Their relationship develops into a rough sibling-like bond beneath the constant insults.

Jin is Fuu's other protector and usually the easier of the two for her to reason with. Jin is calmer and more polite than Mugen, though his emotional reserve can make him just as frustrating when Fuu wants a direct response.

Momo is Fuu's pet flying squirrel and constant companion. Momo hides in her kimono and occasionally rescues her by surprising captors or interfering at a crucial moment.

Seizo Kasumi is [Fuu's father and the "samurai who smells of sunflowers" she spends the series trying to find. Fuu initially believes Seizo Kasumi simply abandoned his family, but later learns that his involvement with persecuted Christians placed them in danger and contributed to his disappearance.](#spoiler)

Fuu's Mother raises Fuu after Seizo disappears. Her illness and eventual death leave Fuu effectively alone and strengthen the resentment she directs toward the absent father who was not present to help them.

Shinsuke is one of several young people Fuu befriends during the journey. Her sympathy for him demonstrates the tendency to become emotionally involved in strangers' lives that repeatedly puts her in danger.

Sara travels temporarily with the group and develops a particularly gentle relationship with Fuu. Fuu does not initially realize that Sara has been coerced into targeting Mugen and Jin, making the eventual conflict especially painful.

Kariya Kagetoki becomes the government assassin who follows Fuu to her father. His mission turns Fuu's personal search into the final confrontation involving both of the swordsmen who traveled across Japan to protect her.
