Dora Sasaki

Dora is stubborn, impulsive, compassionate, and enormously confident in his physical strength. Long before gaining any means of fighting mononoke, he routinely gets into school fights because he cannot ignore people bullying someone weaker. His aggressive reputation therefore comes less from enjoying cruelty than from a habit of solving injustice with his fists.

He is particularly unwilling to accept the limits placed on him. When testing reveals that he possesses no supernatural energy and therefore cannot qualify as an ordinary samurai, Dora does not simply abandon the promise he made to his mother. The refusal is partly stubborn pride, but it is also rooted in his conviction that protecting people matters more than whether the Izanagi Force considers him conventionally qualified.

Dora's initial hatred of mononoke is severe because one killed his mother, yet his morality proves stronger than that prejudice. When he sees Kusanagi protecting humans, he judges the individual in front of him rather than the species responsible for his loss. He later becomes fiercely defensive of Kusanagi whenever members of the Izanagi Force assume that a friendly mononoke must eventually turn dangerous.

Dora possesses no innate supernatural energy, making him incapable of injuring mononoke through conventional human force alone. Physically, however, he is exceptional. Years of fighting have given him strength, speed, toughness, reflexes, and confidence far beyond those of an ordinary person, and he claims never to have lost a normal fight before entering the supernatural world.

His partnership with Kusanagi solves the problem that prevents him from becoming a samurai. Kusanagi can transform into a sword and supply supernatural energy, allowing Dora's physical strength to affect mononoke. Because Dora has no supernatural energy of his own, Kusanagi can also cloak him in mononoke energy without the destructive clash that would normally occur when supernatural forces interfere with one another.

Their synchronization develops through stages. In the Second Stage, the pair combine their strength more completely and surround Dora with a stronger supernatural aura. Reaching the Third Stage requires additional accumulation of energy but produces a substantially greater increase in offensive power.

Their techniques include Merged Mononoke: Heaven-and-Earth Slash, a powerful horizontal sword strike released after charging their combined supernatural energy, and Merged Mononoke: Heaven-and-Earth Strike, a descending attack that concentrates their power into a forceful vertical blow. Dora's weakness is that reaching the higher synchronization stages takes time, meaning stronger enemies can prevent him from accessing his maximum output if they pressure him continuously.

Dora grows up wanting to become a samurai because of a promise to his mother. His father had already died when he was young, and Dora tried to ease his mother's sadness by promising to become a beloved "Leek Samurai" who would create a happier world. His mother's later death in a mononoke attack transforms that childhood promise into a deeply personal determination to fight them.

His formal attempt to become a samurai appears to end before it begins when a blood test reveals zero potential supernatural energy. Soon afterward, however, Dora encounters children threatened by a mononoke and sees Kusanagi trying to protect them. The two discover that Kusanagi's ability to become a weapon allows Dora to use mononoke energy despite lacking any of his own.

Ginchiyo Yagyu eventually discovers their unauthorized partnership. She initially attacks Kusanagi but uses the confrontation to test whether Dora and Kusanagi genuinely refuse to harm humans unnecessarily. Convinced by their behavior, she recruits them as personal collaborators because their unusual partnership can help compensate for the Izanagi Force's shortage of capable fighters.

After helping defeat the Hanya Gyuki, Dora and Kusanagi are severely injured by the mononoke Hidehisa and taken before the Izanagi Force leadership. Their partnership is controversial because many members insist that a mononoke cannot be trusted. Commander Yusai Yagyu ultimately permits them to remain under observation and assigns them to Heisuke Ujii's unit.

Dora subsequently trains alongside official samurai, learns techniques and tactics he never acquired through ordinary street fighting, and becomes increasingly central to the battles against powerful hostile mononoke. The series' conclusion preserves his partnership with Kusanagi as proof that humans and mononoke do not have to remain natural enemies.

Kusanagi is Dora's partner, weapon, and closest companion. Dora initially approaches the mononoke with the hatred produced by his mother's death, but Kusanagi's refusal to harm humans quickly changes his outlook. He becomes intensely protective of Kusanagi and refuses opportunities that would require treating his partner as disposable.

Ginchiyo Yagyu begins by treating Dora and Kusanagi as an unauthorized threat but becomes their first important ally inside the Izanagi Force. Ginchiyo Yagyu recruits them after testing their ethics and later helps legitimize their partnership within the organization.

Heisuke Ujii becomes Dora and Kusanagi's supervising officer after they are brought to Izanagi headquarters. Heisuke Ujii is considerably more experienced at fighting mononoke, making his unit an important part of Dora's transition from an unusually strong civilian into a trained supernatural combatant.

Touma Toda knew Dora from their school years, when the two frequently fought and Dora repeatedly defeated him. After both become connected to the Izanagi Force, Touma Toda functions as a competitive counterpart who possesses the formal supernatural training Dora initially lacks.

Dora's Mother is the central influence behind Dora's ambition. Her death in a mononoke attack intensifies his hatred of the creatures, but her original wish that he become someone capable of making others happy ultimately aligns more closely with his partnership with Kusanagi than with indiscriminate revenge.
