Chikako Matsuura

Chikako is resentful, cold and emotionally abusive toward her nephews. She treats supporting them as an unwanted burden and repeatedly emphasizes that Masaru should not expect the same consideration she gives her own children.

Her behavior is especially hostile toward Ayumu. Ordinary household matters become excuses to remind the brothers that they are dependent on her generosity.

The anime adaptation intensifies her cruelty considerably, depicting physical abuse that is not presented in the same way in the manga.

Chikako is an ordinary human with no supernatural abilities or connection to Gantz.

Her influence over Masaru and Ayumu comes entirely from being their guardian and controlling the household in which they initially live.

Chikako appears during the exploration of Katou's home life between Gantz missions. Her treatment of the brothers explains why Katou is so concerned with earning money and surviving long enough to establish an independent household.

In the manga, she is primarily emotionally abusive and repeatedly makes the brothers feel unwelcome. The anime portrays her behavior more violently, including physical abuse toward Ayumu.

Her household therefore provides an ordinary-world conflict for Katou that cannot be solved with Gantz weapons or enhanced strength.

Masaru Katou is Chikako's nephew and frequently challenges the way she treats his younger brother. Her hostility motivates Masaru Katou to work toward moving out.

Ayumu Katou is Chikako's younger nephew and receives much of her harshest treatment.

Satoshi Matsura is Chikako's husband, while Yukihiko Matsura and Masahiko Matsura are her sons.
