Cheng-Long Liu

Liu is composed, serious and highly confident in his professional abilities. He expects other exorcists to meet similarly high standards and can criticize incompetence without much effort to soften his words.

His seriousness is accompanied by a dry sense of humor. Liu sometimes leads a conversation in an alarming direction before revealing that he is joking, making his deadpan delivery difficult to read.

He appreciates professionalism in others and responds positively to Yukio Okumura's disciplined attitude. His initial reaction to Rin is more cautious because Satan's son represents a supernatural risk that conventional exorcist training does not neatly address.

Liu is an Upper First-Class Exorcist with four Meisters: Aria, Doctor, Knight and Tamer. This broad training makes him effective in both direct combat and supernatural support work.

His primary weapon is a collapsible bō staff. Liu channels Qing Long through the staff, allowing him to produce water-based supernatural attacks.

Da Da Pu Bu rapidly extends the staff through a target after an invocation. Shui Bao Zha channels water through the weapon to produce an explosive attack after Liu drives the staff into his opponent.

His abilities also extend to barriers and sealing work. In the movie, he is trusted with removing an aging supernatural barrier while preparations are made for its replacement, a task requiring exceptional precision.

Liu first appears in Blue Exorcist: The Movie as an exorcist dispatched from Taiwan to assist during the major festival at True Cross Academy Town. He works on replacing the city's aging barrier while other teams manage the enormous number of supernatural incidents associated with the festival.

His path intersects with Rin and the demon Usamaro, whose ability affects memories. Liu's disciplined approach contrasts with Rin's emotional attachment to the young demon.

Liu is one of the few people who retains awareness of Usamaro after the climax of the film, sharing with Rin a memory that others have lost.

Although created for the film, Liu is later incorporated into manga continuity. He appears among the True Cross Order's assembled international forces, making him a rare example of an anime-film character subsequently brought into the original manga.

Yukio Okumura earns Liu's respect through his serious, professional approach to exorcism.

Rin Okumura initially receives more cautious treatment from Liu because of his demonic heritage, although their experiences during the movie alter Liu's understanding of him.

Usamaro becomes central to Liu's mission during the movie and affects the memories of those involved in the festival crisis.

Lucy Yang is a distant relative of Liu and another exceptionally high-ranking exorcist from East Asia.
