Caine the Longshot

Caine is silent and highly disciplined. Because he does not speak, his characterization comes almost entirely through his behavior as an assassin and his willingness to wait at extreme range for a clear shot.

He displays little of the theatrical personality associated with several other Gung-Ho Guns. His approach is patient and impersonal, built around remaining unseen rather than confronting his target face-to-face.

Caine is an exceptional sniper capable of firing accurately from miles away. His rifle has an extraordinarily long barrel and specialized optics designed for extreme-distance shooting.

His poncho can change coloration to match the surrounding landscape, effectively camouflaging him while he remains stationary. Combined with his distant firing position, this makes locating him exceptionally difficult.

Vash the Stampede is nevertheless able to analyze the trajectory of Caine's shots and determine the sniper's position.

Caine first appears alongside other Gung-Ho Guns as Legato Bluesummers's campaign against Vash becomes more direct. His principal action comes when he positions himself far outside a settlement and begins targeting Vash from the desert.

Vash cannot simply return fire because of the enormous distance and Caine's camouflage. Instead, he tracks the incoming shots to locate the sniper and closes the distance.

Vash destroys Caine's rifle and attempts to persuade him to stop fighting. Rather than surrender, Caine draws a revolver and shoots himself. He is later buried in the desert, with his hat and part of the rifle marking the grave.

Vash the Stampede is Caine's principal target. Vash defeats him by determining his location from the trajectory of his sniper fire.

Legato Bluesummers directs the Gung-Ho Guns' campaign against Vash, placing Caine among the assassins sent after him.
