Personality
Personality
The fictional Balmung described by Kagura is normally composed but loses control when his comrades are endangered. He is imagined as a melodramatic dark fantasy hero burdened with a tragic family history and immense hidden power.
The actual monkey identified as Balmung is considerably less dignified. He becomes hostile when brought before the Yorozuya and shares the escaped monkeys' habit of throwing excrement at people.
The contrast between these versions is deliberate: every elaborate detail Kagura invents seems briefly validated by Balmung's appearance, only for the supposed dark knight to behave exactly like an ordinary unruly monkey.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
According to Kagura's invented backstory, Balmung commands the Fakinaway Dark Knights and possesses a third eye that opens when his true power awakens. His ultimate techniques are Dark Fakinaway and Hell Fakinaway, with the latter associated with vaguely defined special circumstances.
Kagura further claims that Balmung eventually becomes the Brutal Emperor Kaiser Fakinaway. These abilities belong to the fictional mythology she improvises rather than an established supernatural system within Gintama.
When an actual Balmung appears, his "Hell Fakinaway" consists of throwing excrement. The visual coincidence between the monkey and Kagura's fantasy is treated entirely as an escalation of the naming gag.
Story Role
Story Role
Balmung begins as one component of the absurdly long name assembled for Jugem Jugem, the monkey being trained by Kyuubei Yagyuu. Kagura proposes "Balmung Fezarion" and immediately invents an elaborate fantasy biography to justify it.
She later expands the idea into a proposed trading-card game called Record of Light and Dark: Fakinaway. Within this invented story, Balmung confronts his father, the Demon Emperor Runny Diarrhea, before being aided by his twin brother Isaac Schneider.
When Jugem disappears, Kotarou Katsura mistakenly sends the real Balmung to the Yorozuya. The coincidence appears to prove Kagura's fantasy exists until Balmung uses "Hell Fakinaway" by pelting everyone with excrement.
Taizou Hasegawa then arrives with Isaac Schneider, creating a physical version of the second fictional hero and extending the joke further.
Relationships
Relationships
Kagura invents the fictional Balmung Fezarion while proposing names for Jugem Jugem, including his personality, powers, family conflict and future title.
Isaac Schneider is Balmung's younger twin brother in the improvised mythology. He is described as the Prince of Light who eventually reconciles with Balmung.
Demon Emperor Runny Diarrhea is Balmung's father and dreaded enemy within Kagura's invented backstory.
Kotarou Katsura captures the real Balmung while mistakenly searching for Jugem Jugem and sends him to the Yorozuya.
Sakata Gintoki and Shimura Shinpachi encounter the real Balmung and discover that "Hell Fakinaway" is far less impressive than its name implies.
