Aya Koda

Aya is outspoken, stubborn, courageous, and intensely invested in her personal idea of justice. She proudly calls herself a warrior of justice and practices karate every day, treating bravery as something that must be demonstrated through action rather than merely claimed.

Her confidence frequently puts her in situations that would frighten most adults. Aya is capable of recognizing danger, but knowing that something is dangerous does not automatically persuade her to retreat. If she believes other people will suffer unless somebody acts, she considers hiding unacceptable.

Aya is also intelligent and quick-thinking. She observes her surroundings carefully, draws useful conclusions from incomplete information, and can improvise when plans fail. Her impulsiveness occasionally undermines that intelligence, particularly when her determination to expose an enemy causes her to act before considering every consequence.

Behind the bravado is a child shaped by a difficult home life. Aya's father repeatedly compares her unfavorably with her mother and older sister, contributing to her determination to prove that she is capable and worthy in her own right. Her conception of heroism therefore carries a deeply personal need to reject the idea that she is inadequate.

Aya has no known supernatural ability. Unlike most of the major combatants surrounding the Armed Detective Agency and Port Mafia, she relies entirely on ordinary human abilities, observation, courage, and improvisation.

She practices karate regularly. Her martial arts training gives her more physical confidence than an average child and forms part of her self-image as a warrior of justice, but she cannot realistically overpower the series' experienced adult fighters or supernatural ability users through martial skill alone.

Aya's most important practical strength is resourcefulness. She can recognize suspicious circumstances, conceal herself, evade pursuit, and improvise solutions under intense pressure. This becomes especially important when she encounters supernatural events she has no ability to counter directly.

Her willingness to act despite that disadvantage distinguishes her from many stronger characters. Aya repeatedly enters situations involving ability users while possessing none of the regenerative, offensive, or defensive powers available to them.

Aya first becomes involved with the Armed Detective Agency through Kunikida during a case involving a bomber. Rather than remaining safely removed from the investigation, she follows Kunikida and insists on helping him locate the culprit.

The case quickly becomes a direct attack on Kunikida's ideals. Shosaku Katsura creates circumstances intended to force Kunikida to choose between individual lives and a larger number of potential victims. Aya herself is fitted with explosives as part of Katsura's attempt to make Kunikida confront a situation in which his ideal of saving everyone appears impossible.

Aya later re-enters the story during the far larger crisis surrounding the Armed Detective Agency and the spread of vampirism. While the Agency is accused of terrorism, Aya encounters the imprisoned Bram Stoker and gradually befriends him rather than treating him merely as a supernatural monster.

That relationship gives Aya an extraordinary role in events far beyond her original bombing case. She discovers that Bram is directly connected to the worldwide vampire outbreak and attempts to separate him from the sword controlling his ability.

When conventional attempts fail, Aya risks her own life in an attempt to free Bram. Her actions become instrumental in breaking the mechanism sustaining the vampire crisis, allowing a ten-year-old civilian with no ability to affect a conflict involving some of the world's most dangerous gifted individuals.

Doppo Kunikida is the first Armed Detective Agency member Aya works alongside. She teases Doppo Kunikida, ignores his attempts to send her somewhere safe, and admires the heroic principles beneath his rigid personality. Kunikida, in turn, becomes fiercely protective of her.

Bram Stoker becomes Aya's most important supernatural companion. Aya initially encounters Bram Stoker under extraordinary circumstances but treats him increasingly as a person rather than a weapon, affectionately calling him "Bra-chan." Their bond becomes central to the effort to stop the vampire outbreak.

Ochi Fukuchi becomes a direct threat to Aya during the airport crisis. Aya recognizes Ochi Fukuchi's connection to the events unfolding around Bram and attempts to gather evidence despite the enormous difference between their physical abilities.

Shosaku Katsura is the bomber involved in Aya's first major case. Shosaku Katsura uses her as part of his attempt to break Kunikida's faith in his ideals, turning Aya from an enthusiastic civilian helper into a direct target.

Aya's unnamed father has a difficult relationship with her. He compares Aya negatively with her deceased mother and older sister, treating her as unable to measure up to the standards they represented. Those experiences contribute to Aya's fierce insistence that she will define for herself what it means to be brave and useful.
