Asa no Hahaoya

Asa's mother is loving, protective, pragmatic, and fiercely determined to secure her daughter's future. She comforts Asa after mistakes rather than treating her clumsiness as a personal failure.

Her protective instinct is powerful enough to override concern for herself. She repeatedly reacts to danger by placing Asa's safety first.

Later memories reveal a much harsher side. Asa's mother is capable of calculated violence when she believes it is necessary to secure her daughter's financial future, and resentment toward her husband also influences her actions.

Asa's mother is an ordinary human with no established Devil contract, supernatural ability, or professional combat training.

She is nevertheless physically courageous and willing to confront immediate danger directly when Asa is threatened.

During one attack, she uses a rock against the Devil threatening Asa's father and then manipulates the circumstances surrounding his injuries. Her significance comes from human choices rather than supernatural strength.

Asa remembers her mother while explaining why she is terrified of making mistakes. During a Typhoon Devil disaster, Asa turns back to rescue Crambon, the injured cat she refuses to abandon.

Asa trips while carrying Crambon, and her mother turns back to help her. She pushes Asa out of danger but is killed by the Typhoon Devil's destruction. Asa subsequently blames herself for having created the delay that cost her mother's life.

Later memories complicate Asa's family history further. Asa reveals that her father was injured during an earlier Devil attack and that her mother deliberately killed him, expecting insurance money from a Devil-related death to provide enough money for Asa's education. She also claims he had been unemployed and unfaithful.

These events deepen Asa's fixation on moral correctness because some of the adults she loved made decisions whose motives combined protection, resentment, selfishness, and sacrifice.

Asa Mitaka is Asa no Hahaoya's daughter and the person she works hardest to protect. Her loss becomes one of Asa's deepest sources of guilt and shapes Asa's obsession with avoiding mistakes.

Crambon is the cat Asa rescues during the Typhoon Devil disaster, indirectly creating the situation in which Asa's mother turns back to protect her daughter.

Typhoon Devil causes the destruction during which Asa's mother sacrifices herself to save Asa.
