Akira Wataya

Akira receives relatively little characterization compared with Arata and Hajime. His appearances present him principally as a father and husband rather than as someone directly involved in the competitive-karuta world.

There is some distance in his relationship with his own father. Arata indicates that the two did not get along well, creating a contrast with the exceptionally close bond between Hajime and his grandson.

Akira also participates in the ordinary teasing and domestic exchanges of the Wataya household, keeping the family scenes from being defined entirely by karuta.

Akira is not established as a ranked competitive karuta player. Despite being the son of a legendary Meijin, the series does not attribute Hajime's championship-level playing ability to him.

His importance to the karuta storyline is therefore indirect, through the family connecting Hajime's generation to Arata's.

Akira appears as the story explores Arata's family circumstances in Fukui. His presence establishes that Arata's extraordinary connection with Hajime was not simply an extension of an entire household devoted equally to competitive karuta.

The difference between generations is significant. Hajime's legacy passes most visibly to his grandson rather than through Akira as another champion, making Arata's pursuit of the Meijin title a personal inheritance rather than an automatic family profession.

Arata Wataya is Akira's son. Akira forms part of the home environment surrounding Arata Wataya as the younger Wataya pursues increasingly serious competitive karuta.

Mari Wataya is Akira's wife, and the two share the ordinary responsibilities of the Wataya household.

Hajime Wataya is Akira's father. Their relationship was less harmonious than the bond Hajime Wataya developed with his grandson.
