Akihiko Arai

Akihiko is calm, intelligent and dependable. He rarely needs to assert himself loudly to be taken seriously; his competence across school, sports and social situations makes him someone the other children naturally respect.

His level-headedness distinguishes him from both the younger children's impulsiveness and Tamako's tendency to become flustered by her own interests. Akki is generally able to assess a situation without becoming swept up in the same panic or excitement as those around him.

He is also supportive of his sister. Tamako may be embarrassed by aspects of her manga obsession, but Akki treats her goal of becoming a professional manga artist seriously and encourages her creative ambitions rather than dismissing them.

Akihiko is notably capable in a wide range of ordinary activities. He performs well academically, is skilled at sports and handles social interactions with a maturity beyond what might be expected from an elementary-school student.

He is also good at video games, one of his established hobbies. His broad competence rather than a single specialized talent is the defining feature of his abilities; he tends to perform well whether the task is intellectual, athletic or recreational.

That versatility gives Akki a somewhat unusual position among the island children. Although still a sixth-grader, he can often behave with greater composure and practical judgment than older characters caught up in their own anxieties.

Akihiko expands the Arai family beyond Tamako and provides a calmer counterpoint to his older sister. While Tamako is consumed by manga, artistic ambition and her attempts to deny certain fandom interests, Akki observes her behavior from the perspective of a younger sibling who knows her well.

His competence also makes him distinctive within the children's group. Naru and Kenta are defined largely by energy, while Hina is shy and easily overwhelmed; Akki is the dependable older child who can approach games, sports and other activities with consistent ability.

His support for Tamako's manga ambitions adds substance to their sibling relationship. Rather than existing only to tease his eccentric older sister, he recognizes that creating manga is something she genuinely wants to pursue.

Tamako Arai is Akihiko's older sister. Despite Tamako Arai's tendency to become embarrassed about her manga interests, Akki takes her ambition to become a mangaka seriously and supports her efforts.

Naru Kotoishi is one of the younger children in Akki's island community. His composed personality contrasts with Naru Kotoishi's impulsive enthusiasm, though both belong to the close social network of children around the village.

Sei Handa becomes another familiar adult within that community after moving into the house the children had previously treated as their base.
