Akebi Haiba

Akebi is confident, perceptive, playful, and highly comfortable with confrontation. When she becomes curious about Neru, she does not approach him through a lengthy explanation of Amato High or its curriculum. Instead, she puts on a mask, brings a weapon, and tests him through combat, allowing both of them to judge the other through martial movement.

She takes Neru seriously despite his lack of formal credentials. His isolated upbringing and eccentric training habits could easily make him appear amateurish to a student from a specialized martial-arts school, yet Akebi recognizes enough genuine ability and dedication to believe he belongs among trained practitioners.

Akebi also enjoys provoking reactions. She is willing to surprise Neru, conceal her intentions briefly, and present challenges without explaining everything in advance. Her confidence comes from established skill rather than an attempt to appear mysterious, and once Neru responds positively to being defeated, she becomes much more openly encouraging.

Her interest in Neru is rooted in shared enthusiasm for martial arts. She recognizes the intensity with which he trains and offers him something his grandfather's book cannot provide: another living practitioner who can respond, improvise, and expose weaknesses that repeated solo practice leaves invisible.

Akebi is already an accomplished martial artist when Neru meets her. Her ability is sufficiently advanced that she defeats him during their first encounter despite the extensive conditioning he has undergone since childhood. That loss is especially meaningful because Neru had rarely encountered anyone capable of directly testing the training left by his grandfather.

Her fighting emphasizes speed, timing, balance, and refined technique. Neru recognizes movements connected to material from his Bugeisho while fighting her, suggesting that her formal martial education overlaps with traditions represented in his grandfather's teachings.

Akebi is comfortable handling weapons as part of martial practice. During her first challenge to Neru, she brings a Japanese sword into the encounter and incorporates armed martial movement into the test. The setting of Amato High broadens that context further, since the academy organizes its curriculum around multiple traditional martial disciplines rather than a single unarmed fighting style.

Her advantage over Neru is initially less about superior enthusiasm than about having trained in an environment populated by other martial artists. She understands distance against an active opponent, adapts to unexpected movement, and has access to forms of practice Neru could never reproduce entirely by himself.

Akebi enters the story after Neru loses the martial arts book left by his grandfather. She first learns about his unusual circumstances and travels to his isolated home, where evidence of constant solitary training makes clear how completely martial arts dominate his daily life.

Rather than simply returning what he has lost or explaining herself immediately, Akebi challenges Neru. She demonstrates material he recognizes from the Bugeisho and defeats him. The encounter gives Neru precisely the experience he has been missing: undeniable proof that his current level is only one point along a much larger path.

Akebi then directs him toward Amato High School of the 18 Martial Arts, the specialized institution she attends. Official VIZ and MANGA Plus descriptions treat this invitation as the series' inciting change, moving Neru from isolated mountain practice into a school filled with experienced martial artists.

Once Neru reaches Amato, Akebi is no longer his sole window into martial arts. The school introduces numerous practitioners, tests, disciplines, and rivalries, meaning Neru must establish relationships independent of her. Even so, the standard created by their first fight remains important because Akebi represents the moment martial arts stop being something inherited from the past and become part of Neru's present social world.

Her family connection also matters within the school. Jokuro Haiba, her twin brother, is himself a notable martial artist, placing Akebi within a sibling pair whose skill and background contrast with Neru's solitary childhood.

The final chapter jumps forward beyond the school material the serialization had time to depict. Akebi and Neru's relationship remains significant in that future, and their later interaction consciously returns to the challenge established when she first found him in the mountains.

Neruma Isami becomes Akebi's most important new connection at the beginning of the series. After hearing about the isolated martial artist, [Akebi Haiba] cannot be self-linked, but Neruma Isami interests her enough that she seeks him out personally. Their first spar ends with her victory and immediately transforms his understanding of his own ability.

Akebi functions as Neruma Isami's guide into Amato High without becoming his conventional master. She is a peer who begins far ahead of him in practical experience, giving their relationship a competitive quality that differs from the teacher-student bond Neru once shared with his grandfather.

Jokuro Haiba is Akebi's twin brother. Both belong to the martial environment surrounding Amato High, and their connection makes the Haiba siblings one of the clearest examples of Neru encountering practitioners whose martial education has developed within a living community rather than in isolation. Their sibling relationship is explicitly reflected in material identifying them collectively as the Haiba twins.

Hizuki Isami is not Akebi's direct relative, but his martial legacy provides the bridge between her and Neru. The techniques and teachings associated with Hizuki Isami's Bugeisho are recognizable enough during Akebi's first spar with Neru to make him realize that she belongs to the wider martial world he has been searching for.

Toriichi Hatori, Tomoharu Shoze, and Kaname Nozomiya belong to the wider group of Amato students with whom Akebi and Neru train and interact as his school life develops.
